A new piece of vital equipment has arrived at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s cardiac services, thanks to the donors of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

Through the fundraising efforts of Radio Day, which took place in October 2021, more than $678,000 was raised, with $270,000 of donations going directly toward a new echocardiogram machine.

An echocardiogram, or echo, is an ultrasound that checks the structure and function of the heart and its valves.

“This is a key tool for investigating patients with heart disease, patients with heart failure, cancer patients who are getting chemotherapy, pregnant women, and more,” says Dr. Paul MacDonald, cardiologist. “Previously, we had machines that were 16-years old and really out of date. This new machine lets us have the latest available equipment and makes a big impact on all of our patients.”

The arrival of the new echocardiogram machine also means shorter wait times for approximately 5,000 annual cardiovascular patients and 50 monthly cancer patients who receive vital testing as it relates to the heart. Additionally, the new machine offers the ability to perform Strain testing, which is necessary when planning cancer treatments, and will reduce the need for more invasive tests using nuclear medicine.

“Our community of donors never ceases to amaze us,” says Paula MacNeil, CEO of the Foundation. “Just over 470 donors contributed to this vital purchase for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and cardiac services. This is a true example of ‘power in numbers,’ and we are incredibly grateful. Thank you!”

Save the date: Radio Day 2022 will take place on Thursday, October 6!
