McHappy Day raises $102,000 to support lifesaving care at Cape Breton Regional Hospital

Every burger, coffee, Happy Meal and menu item purchased during McHappy Day 2026 helped make a difference for patients on the Island.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Cape Bretoners and the dedication of local McDonald’s owner/operators, McHappy Day 2026, held on May 6, raised $102,000 in support of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
The funds will purchase two Belmont Rapid Infusers for the Emergency Department at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH). Each year, the CBRH Emergency Department cares for approximately 45,000 patients, making access to advanced, lifesaving equipment essential for delivering timely care.
“When patients arrive in critical condition, every second counts,” says Michelle MacNeil, Health Service Manager, Emergency Department, CBRH. “Belmont Rapid Infusers allow our teams to deliver large volumes of warmed fluids and blood products quickly and safely during life-threatening emergencies. Having this equipment available will strengthen our ability to respond when time is of the essence and help us provide the highest level of care for patients across Cape Breton.”
Over the past decade, local McDonald’s restaurants have raised more than $700,000 through McHappy Day in support of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, helping fund equipment and projects across multiple areas of the hospital.
Recent investments include:
- 2025 – Centralized Monitoring System for Pediatrics, which enables nurses to continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, allowing them to quickly identify changes in a child’s condition and intervene sooner.
- 2024 – Video Endoscopic Unit, which is a mobile system supporting ENT care that is now used throughout Pediatrics, Ambulatory Care, the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department, improving airway assessments and diagnostic capabilities.
- 2023 – Pediatrics Toy Room Renovation: A complete transformation of the Toy Room into a welcoming, interactive space that brings comfort, play and a sense of normalcy to children receiving care.
These projects represent just a few of the many ways McHappy Day has strengthened patient care throughout the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

“Every year, we’re inspired by the incredible support our customers, crew members and community show on McHappy Day,” says Wayne Kennerknecht, Owner, McDonald’s Cape Breton. “Knowing that these funds stay right here in Cape Breton and help provide lifesaving equipment for our local hospital makes every donation and every purchase even more meaningful. We’re proud to continue partnering with the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation to make a lasting difference for local patients and families.”
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation and local McDonald’s celebrated this year’s fundraising success during a special event in the Pediatrics Unit, where hospital staff reflected on the lasting impact of previous McHappy Day-funded projects while looking ahead to the difference this year’s donation will make in emergency care.
“This year’s success is another incredible example of what can happen when an entire community comes together,” said Caitlyn MacDonald, Manager of Philanthropy, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. “Our partnership with McDonald’s Cape Breton continues to create meaningful improvements to health care, right here at home. Their generosity has touched countless lives by funding equipment and spaces that improve care for patients of all ages. We are incredibly grateful for their continued commitment to our community.”
The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation extends its sincere thanks to the local McDonald’s owner/operators, the Kennerknecht’s, and restaurant staff, volunteers and every community member who supported McHappy Day 2026.
