Cape Breton’s Largest Road Hockey Tournament Returns

SYDNEY, N.S – The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation’s Because You Care Cup will return, after the event was postponed the past two years due to the pandemic.

The Foundation’s signature event, which is known as being Cape Breton’s largest road hockey tournament, first began in 2014 and has since helped to raise more than $400,000 for various health care needs in Cape Breton.

“We have really missed hosting the Because You Care Cup tournament for the past two years,” says Dave Curnew, Co-Chair of the Because You Care Cup committee. “It’s a fun and meaningful community event, which supports an important cause that touches us all – health care. Our committee is excited to rally teams again for some friendly competition!”

This year’s Because You Care Cup, presented by ARL Mechanical, will support the Foundation’s Area of Greatest Need fund.

“The Area of Greatest Need fund allows our Foundation to work with the health care experts of Nova Scotia Health’s Eastern Zone to fund priority health care needs as they arise,” says Paula MacNeil, Foundation CEO. “More than 600,000 patient visits are made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital each year, and needs can range from a patient needing help with transportation to their appointments to funding a vital piece of equipment for our hospital.” The 2022 tournament will take place in Membertou on September 17 and 18. In the past, more than 500 players, 50 teams, 60 volunteers, and several community partners join together to make the fun-filled weekend possible.

Registration will be available in the coming weeks – stay tuned!
