New campaign to advance Diagnostic Imaging & Pathology at the CBRH

The Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation has launched a new campaign, ‘A Clear Path Forward,’ with the goal of advancing Diagnostic Imaging and Pathology at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH).
The campaign has a fundraising goal of $2.7 million to replace aging equipment, expand capacity, and introduce new technology; all of which will help with timely answers and accurate diagnoses.
“We often hear from patients and families that waiting for results is one of the hardest parts of their health care journeys,” says Paula MacNeil, CEO, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. “Our goal is to reduce the period of fear and uncertainty by providing the tools our health care experts need to make quicker diagnoses, here in Cape Breton.”
Accounting for $1.7 million of the campaign’s goal is a new CT (Computed Tomography) scanner. Currently, one CT scanner – of only two at the CBRH – has reached its end of life and needs to be replaced. A new CT scanner will provide improved image quality and help reduce wait times for the thousands of scans performed each year.
The campaign will also bring a Leica Slide Scanner to the CBRH for the first time ever. This scanner converts patients’ tissue samples into high-resolution digital images. Currently, more than 125,000 pathology slides are manually created at the CBRH each year.
“Having a Leica Slide Scanner will be a giant step forward for both stabilizing the Eastern Zone pathology service and giving our patients rapid access to consults,” states Dr. Tim Mailman, Head, IWK Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. “Instead of transporting glass slides around the province in all weather conditions, the Eastern Zone will be able to instantly send digital images.”
