Teal to Heal raises $243,000 for gynecological cancer
On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, hundreds of Cape Bretoners gathered in Membertou to celebrate the third annual Teal to Heal.
The cold temperatures and rain did not deter supporters. In fact, the event surpassed its initial $200,000 fundraising goal, and raised a record-breaking total of $243,070.
Attendees participated in either a 2KM or 5KM walk or run, enjoyed a wellness expo featuring a variety of vendors, were entertained by live music, and were able to bid on silent auction items.
Following the walk/run was an award ceremony celebrating top racers and fundraisers and featured the unveiling of the total amount raised.
Since its inaugural year, Teal to Heal Cape Breton has now raised $538,916 for those battling gynecological cancers in Cape Breton.
All funds raised from Teal to Heal support the Teal at Home Fund offered through the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. The Fund (and event) was created in 2022 by Dena Edwards Wadden, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 33 years old.
Since launching three years ago, the Fund has helped to purchase hospital equipment, provide care packages to those battling gynecological cancers, and provide support in the areas of travelling to specialist appointments, accommodations for medical-related travel, childcare during treatment, psychologist visits, medication support, respite care, and more.
